What is a Letter of Assignment?

The basis for your assignment to a specific unit

A Letter of Assignment (Otnoshenie) — is an official document from the commander of a military unit, confirming the readiness to accept a specific citizen for contract military service in the chosen specialty.

Official Status

The document is issued through the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation using an approved form.

Unit selection

Serves as the basis for sending the candidate to a specific unit in the chosen specialty and signing a contract.

Personalization

It is issued in the name of a specific citizen and cannot be transferred to another person.

Mandatory Stage

Without it, it is impossible to be deployed to the specific unit you have chosen.

Do not confuse it with other documents:

A Letter of Acceptance is not a referral from the military enlistment office (which is strictly advisory), nor is it a verbal agreement or roster entry. It is the official basis for your assignment to a specific unit in your chosen specialty.

  • Number and location of the military unit

Risks of serving without a Letter of Assignment

General Contract Terms

There are no guarantees when being assigned to units and positions. You may be appointed to any vacancy, and the conditions (schedule, duties, location) may differ from your expectations.

Arbitrary Distribution

Without a letter, the candidate enters a general pool. You could be sent to any military unit, even in another region.

Risk of Losing Payments

Lump-sum payments vary by region. Without a letter, there is a risk of receiving a base payment instead of an enhanced one.
